In the shady campgrounds of Yosemite valley, climbers carved out a counterculture lifestyle of dumpster-diving and wild parties that clashed with the conservative values of the National Park Service.

Valley Uprising

Review

It was incredible to see the progression, from a week, to a day, to hours ascending what was previously thought impossible. The techniques used and the limits were always been improved and tested.

There was an interesting look at the culture and counter-culture which followed the different eras of climbing. The rivalries, the camaraderie and the sense of belonging and community were all important.

All the people involved are adrenalin junkies and looking for the next hit. Free soloing – climbing without any ropes – is the pinnacle and reflects the initial “pure” way of climbing the pioneers strived for in the beginning.

It is unfathomable how much progress was made over the 60 years, which goes to show what is possible with passion. The soundtrack is pumping, the characters are interesting and achievements showcased are groundbreaking. This would make a great companion movie to both Free Solo and The Dawn Wall which focus more on incredible climbs within the Yosemite Valley.
